Notes: George Long’s translation is renowned for its clear, unadorned prose, which reflects the direct, practical style of Epictetus’s original Greek text. It became one of the most widely read English translations of Epictetus’s work and influenced the way Stoicism was received in Britain and America. It was a standard reference work for scholars and educators. It made a significant contribution to the 19th-century revival of Stoic thought.
