Notes: Johann Ludwig Gottfried (c. 1584–1633) produced one of the most influential reference works on world history: the Historische Chronick. First published in 1631, it was expanded and supplemented for the 1674, 1710 and 1743 editions. It is even said that Goethe (1749–1832) used the Historische Chronick as a textbook in his younger years.
