Notes: Eugen Ehmann (1887–1963) studied architecture in Stuttgart between 1905 and 1909 and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1918 to 1924. His doctoral thesis Der moderne Baustil (The Modern Architectural Style) was published by Julius Hoffmann-Verlag in 1919. With his design Die Trösterin (the comforter), Ehmann was commissioned by Wolfsberg in 1920 to design the poster for the exhibition of German graphic art. While the subject of the picture, a classical Pietà motif, is still entirely influenced by the impressions of the World War, the drawn poster typeface appears lighter and somewhat playful, as if to counteract the weight of the content of the picture motif. A beautiful example from the time of German post-war expressionism.
